Aazadi in India

It was a delight to watch Kanhaiya last night speaking at Admin Block in JNU about freedom in India (not from India ).

The ideological positioning and ,some may call, Utopian world to demand freedom from  from poverty, illiteracy, corruption, feudalism, communalism and access to better education system and health care services are paths to make beautiful India which was dreamed by freedom fighters during the freedom struggle.

There may be differences of opinion but we must not pronounce judgement before the judgment by the honorable court. 

When Rule of Law and logic take back seat, then fringe elements of every section of the society try to occupy the driving seat, take the Constitution in their own hands and start passing judgment based on their narrow and parochial thinking. When everyone except the court start passing judgment and executing them also, then this is the sign of beginning of those rules which destroyed many countries and they are still not learning it. 

We must stand by Rule of Law, Stand by Constitution of India and allow the court to decide on the merit of the case. 

Ever second child in India is malnourished and we do not have plan to address this issue. If we do not recognize this menace, then 30 to 35 years down the line (when these children become adult) our nation will have highest number of youth but with lowest rate of production or contributing to socio- economic activities of the country. No one is talking about children in the age group of 0-6 years, the most critical age for development of human body- physical, emotional and mental.  These children should have fundamental rights for nutritional support, pre-schooling and access to health care services specailly pediatricians.

Dear Satish,
I have been following the debate very closely and reading all the postings.

I believe there  are two kinds of members at this forum- one who thinks government school are not performing, hence private players must enter and provide so called ‘quality education’. And the 2nd kind of members are those who think government school must perform. Hence stop trade in education.

Anyone who even thinks education happens there needs to take time off to rethink what education is or should be in the times we live in.” dated March 18th at Arkitect India- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/arkitectindia/message/15939 clearly give indication that you are one of those who think the government schools don’t perform.  Many people like you have given end number of examples to support government withdrawal from the school and offering it to Education Business Houses. And I am sure you may have ‘solid’ facts and figure to support it.  I sincerely believe that the following may be the reasons behind your thoughts. [Note: when I  say you or your, I am addressing the whole group of people who believe that the government schools are not-performing, hence private players are the only solution. So the ‘you’  is not a personal to one person. It is just because I am responding to your mail. ]. Probably one or two of the following points may be the basis of your arguments.  
  1. You may have read reports like The Birla Ambani Report on education. We know why they want government to withdraw from education ‘market’
  2.  You may have information about ‘non-performing’  schools (including govt. schools) but not able to develop these information  into a knowledge. Information to Knowledge to  Wisdom. It is a long debate. I  am not expecting wisdom but I do expect right knowledge- that is why these schools are not performing.     
  3. or you may have only read the last line or last paragraph of a report which says govt schools are not performing and missed the whole body of report which says why some government schools are performing well and some government schools are not performing well or not performing at all.

In villages (I belong to Kataila village, Ghazipur, Eastern UP) it is said that neem hakeem, khatre jaan” (half knowledge is always dangerous).  Like some people are quoting “government schools are not performing” without understanding the whole context and politics of trade in education, I was also often quoting “religion is opium of masses”. I heard this from some friends in JNU and I got convinced without questioning or probing it.

Many years I only knew Marx’ this sentence “ Religion is the opium of masses”. I would always quote this phrase to defend my childish/ amateur thinking about religious criticism- be it Islam, Christian, Hinduism or any religious believe. But I thank to JNU  culture of Post Dinner Talk in which I was corrected and told to read some articles (probably in 1990 or 1991). In the next post dinner talk a student gave me a xerox copy of an article .  I read that article several times.

  It was there I realized that I was reading the last sentence of a paragraph. It gives different meaning if we read along with the paragraph and different meaning if it is read separately.      According to Marx, religion is an expression of material realities and economic injustice. Thus, problems in religion are ultimately problems in society. Religion is not the disease, but merely a symptom. It is used by oppressors to make people feel better about the distress they experience due to being poor and exploited. This is the origin of his comment that religion is the “opium of the masses” — but as shall see, his thoughts are much more complex than commonly portrayed. The full quoate is “Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.”


This is a long debate and I will leave it here to proceed with the original issue- the government schools are non-performing institutions, hence go for private school.

The purpose of above argument is to make the point clear that many of us are picking of the last sentence of the thesis/ article which says that the government schools are not performing. We have to read the whole issue in proper context- the thesis in support of trade in education so that selected few can get “quality education” and the rest…

The government schools (read institutions, because the next target is other organs of the govt.) are not This is 100 % wrong statement and understanding. People who support private players in education  or trade in education points two things-
[1] They don’t understand the dynamics degrading government institutions or

Government schools DO NOT offer education. Anyone who even thinks education happens there needs to take time off to rethink what education is or should be in the times we live in. Only those who went to government schools and ended up getting a government job may think it works.

Imagine this: even the government sets 33% as a bare minimum pass mark. How many children going to government schools end up knowing how to write correctly in their own mother tongue even after a B degree like a BA etc?

Did you not see the results that less than 1 percent teachers with a B Ed degree could pass the governments test in Delhi?

EI has found a niche for itself that is good while being a century out of date. But india is growing a century behind if you take the weighted average of its collective knowledge anyway!

Indo-Persian World

Indo-Persian World 
It was in 1996 or 97, I booked this name for a Research Journal from Brahmaputra Hostel JNU.  It was registered at RNI, New Delhi but we never brought it in a printed form. 

A group of students from CAAL/SL/JNU would write and bring it as a wall magazine because of lack of fund to support it.

Now the time has come to think about bringing it in two format- online & offline.
The wall magazine was discontinued after l left JNU in 2002.

Imam of Hamdard University Mosque

This time I went for my Eid Namaz in Hamdard University Mosque.
The Imam's message before the Namza impressed me a lot. I am not sure I have listen to such a wonderful message at the time of Edi Namaz. The Imam covered all the aspect of life and linked them with the Quran & Hadis. I will shared few of them.

He quoted one incident before the message. After the Alvida Namaz at the last Eid, people left the mosque and filled the whole road. There was a traffic jam. A patient was on the way from Batra Hospital to Escort Heart Hospital. Because of the traffic jam created by irresponsible Namazi of the Alvida Namaz, the patient could not reach the Escort. The family members of the patient were crying, running, requesting but no one could give a damn to their request. It was an emergency case, some of us (namzis on the road) should have taken initiative to create way for the ambulance.
His message: It was a long & elaborate lecture but i will just share its crux. When you leave today after the namaz, please abide by the traffic rule. Do not disturb traffic. Let others go 1st before you. Our action is a message for them. We should walk at the walking space of the road. DO NOT BLOCK TRAFFIC.

Be Nice & Humble

Be Nice & Humble
-Because Life is short and uncertain!

It was shocking news. I could not believe. A friend’s friend succumbed to heart attack on Monday. He was just 44 year old, smart and handsome. He had a meeting in Gurgaon and then he had to go to Okhala Industrial Area for another meeting. The day was full of meetings. But he could only finish the 1st meeting of the day and that was the last meeting of his life.


That was really a very painful news. He left for his heavenly journey at the age of 44. May his soul rest in peace.

The first thing came in my heart is:

Life is short and uncertain,
Be a nice and humble person!

The way YY & PB was removed from the PAC of AAP reflects immaturity and arrogance of the party. Mayank Gandhi’s Letter to volunteers says a lot.  The AAP is developing “High Command Culture of Congress & BJP” of for that matter any other political parties. People supported AAP because they rejected BJP & Cong culture.   

The party should be run by system, rules & regulation.  It must be transparent and just. AAP internal conflict could and should have been handled better.  

I salute YY for mature response to the most adverse time in his political life. His ideas for AAP, his views for AAP and his message for AAP volunteers is must matured and politically right than the whole NE members who voted him out.  The truth will come out. 1st YY. Now Maynak and then there will be many more. Most of the people joined or supported for alternative kind of political values. Certainly suppressing the voice of others can not be one of those values people supported them.

I hope the good sense will prevail sooner than later. It reminds me about this verses “Na samjhoge toh  mit jaaoge, ae hindustan waalon, tumhari daastan tak bhi milegi daastanon mein”
समझोगे तो मिट जाओगे   हिंदुस्तान वालों 
तुम्हारी दास्तान भी मिलेगी दास्तानों में 


This is best suited for AAP. They must understand why people like them so much. They must ensure they stand for what they are known for. They failed in the 1st test. Hope they will improve in future.

Hum Log, we the people of Delhi, can help Delhi government by paying our taxes honestly and taking bills for all the purchases we are going to make.

Today (the 16th Day of February 2015) is the first day of the AAP Government in Delhi. There were lots of debate & discussion going on social media, electronic media and the traditional print media. Most of the people wants to give sometime to the AAP.

Now, since the government is formed, we must be alert & vigilant. We should also remind ourselves that this is the Delhi Government & not the AAP government. The promises made by the AAP looks very ambitious and beyond the Delhi budget but that is what the people of Delhi want and gave a clear majority.  But we do not care- you have promised, you have to deliver. 

As a lay person, person with no economic background,  can suggestion step one for the people of Delhi. Let me also confess that I do not know how much money/ revenue  can be generated if all people do what I am thinking and suggesting. Based on my little knowledge & experience I think step one can be a good economic support for the Delhi
Government.

[NOTE-1: I met 100 people in Delhi (mostly in Mehrauli). The purpose of meeting these people was to understand how many of them take original bills with TIN number on it. I had to drop the idea of TIN because many of these respondent do not have idea about the TIN. So I concentrated one kind of consumers- those who buy medicines. And ask for Pakka and Kachcha bills. I chose medicines because everyone at one or other points buys medicines. Once I decided for medicine consumers, the next question was whom to ask? I decided not to ask those people who claim medical reimbursement from their offices or mediclaims. Because these people have to take bills anyway. So the sample was very small and selective. Most of the respondents are known to me. It does linot give perspective of people of Delhi]

[NOTE-2: The questions. Do you take pakka bills when buy medicines? Yes Or No? .Why? Do you take bills from other shops?- Yes or Know. Why? I have not included those answer which get bills without asking for it- eg. Big Bazar, KFC, Lilli Put or mobile shops etc. Apart from medicines ask 2-3 questions also. Do you take pakka bills when buy cloths from local market? Do you take pakka bills when buy sweets from Bikaner, Agrawals or such shops? Do you take bills when you buy daily use things from local market?]

I asked these questions to myself also. I take pakka bills from chemist shops because I get reimbursements. So the first question is  not applicable to me.   In the last one month I did not take bills from sweet shops. We bought bed sheets & blanket  from a local market in Mehrauli. I checked the bill. It does not have TIN number. Grocery Shops/ General Store in Mehrauli never gives pakka bills.

 To my surprise majority of the people (98 % of whom l contacted) do not care about asking bills from these shops.  None of them tried to check whether the bill is Kacchcha or pakka- meaning the bill has TIN or not. The general answer was “what will we do with the bills? It has to go to the dust bin. So why to ask for the bills. 5 % take bills from chemist shops if the amount is high (more than Rs. 200-300/-) or if they want to return the medicines in future. Again they do not check whether the bills are pakka or kachcha.     

Conclusion & Recommendation:
It is important to note that except in few cases, the amount you way the shop remains the same. I checked this at several chemist shops- they charge you the same amount whether you take bills or not.  Some shop keepers charges taxes (VAT) but we should give it.

If we voted for the government in the name of honesty, we should also become honest. It is a difficult proposition. It will cost us in the form of taxes, ill treatment from the shop keepers for wasting their times in making bills and sometime people may make fun of you. I bought a kg of mutton. When I asked for bill- the shop keeper was amused. Yeh kaunsa piece hai? He thought I was asking for some specific mutton piece. I stood for an hour there and noticed that no one asks for bills- some bought 1 kg and some also bought 5 kg.

I think the common persons can make a difference buy start asking for
