Greetings from JNU Alumni Connect (ALC).

The Election Committee is pleased to announce the newly elected Governing Body of JNU Alumni Connect (ALC) for the term 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027.

Nominations were invited for all 13 Governing Body positions. As the number of valid nominations exactly matched the available posts and there were no withdrawals, all candidates have been elected unopposed. Therefore, no voting was required on 27 December 2025.

✅ The new Governing Body will assume office on 1 January 2026, ensuring continuity and progress on key initiatives, including the JNU Alumni Campus project (Phase 1 land pooling).

Meet Zohran Kwame Mamdani

HIS rise has been swift and vertical. Donald Trump, among others, is struggling to figure out who exactly Zohran Kwame Mamdani is. They know that the newly elected Democratic mayoral candidate for New York in the Nov 4 elections stands for the liberation of Palestine. They probably also know that he accuses Narendra Modi of mass murder in Gujarat, even if India’s supreme court has given him the proverbial clean chit for the 2002 carnage of Muslims. In a pre-election interview, mayoral candidates were asked if they would help the Indian prime minister hold another rally in the city. All said no, but Mamdani went on to emphasise that he would never wish to meet Modi if elected mayor of New York. Zohran should not perhaps worry about that possibility if reports are true about the possible resignation of Modi in September, when he attains the retirement age of 75 that he set for all BJP office bearers.

But Mamdani’s critics (and many supporters) don’t quite seem to know how or why he succeeded in toppling the Democratic Party’s applecart by upstaging its poster boy Andrew Cuomo in the race. Cuomo’s elitist supporters include Zionist Jews from Brooklyn, who reportedly helped mobilise a whopping $25 million to defeat Mamdani. They are naturally worried by the turn of events. Mamdani’s reply to them was reassuring, even disarming. Hate crimes trouble him equally, including the current antisemitic uptick across the US. His pledge to them was his proposal for an 800 per cent increase in the city’s mayoral budget to arrest hate-crimes.

Trump, nevertheless, has called him a communist lunatic and reports are coming in of assassination threats to the 33-year-old Ugandan migrant with a winsome smile. To appreciate Zohran’s secular and progressive Hindu and Muslim lineage, it might help to look for a clue in his middle name, Kwame. The one Kwame his parents possibly named him after and who best fits the sketchy political profile we have of the Mamdanis, is Kwame Nkrumah. The radical left politician led Ghana to independence from Britain but was overthrown after a short tenure as president by a Western-backed military coup while he was visiting China in 1966. Nkrumah, together with Patrice Lumumba, Kenneth Kaunda and Julius Nyerere, was an idol for post-colonial masses in Africa and beyond. South Asians saw him as a genuine friend, and Jawaharlal Nehru courted him as a comrade. Some say he was the inspiration for Martin Luther King’s doctrine of peaceful resistance.

We also know that Zohran was born in Kampala, where his father of Gujarati Shia Muslim origins began his journey as a scholar with a focus on colonialism, ethnic strife and migration. Mahmood Mamdani has written outstanding books on colonialism and society, a more widely lauded being Good Muslim, Bad Muslim. To get a handle on the phenomenon his son is, we may benefit from discussing his father’s scholarly quest.

In Good Muslim, Bad Muslim, Mamdani discusses the rise of political Islam, and answers questions that Americans have struggled with since Osama bin Laden, the former American protégé, staged a spectacular attack on the US. Mamdani dispels the easy description of ‘good’ Muslims being secular or Westernised and the ‘bad’ being slotted as pre-modern and fanatical. In his view, political Islam emerged from a modern encounter with the West. The terrorist movement at the centre of political Islam is an even more recent phenomenon, one “that followed America’s embrace of proxy war after its defeat in Vietnam”.

The book seems relevant to today’s perceptions of the Israel-Iran contest. Amid the megaphoned Western vilification of ‘mullahs’ ruling Iran, a 5,000-year-old civilisation is condemned by its parvenue rivals who were largely created from the British-French division of spoils following Turkey’s defeat in 1919. Look carefully, and all the post-Cold War Western targets were utterly secular states — from Iraq to Libya, from Algeria to Syria, and from Lebanon to Yemen. Damned if you are secular, damned if you are not.

Mamdani’s other acclaimed works include a signal point of departure in analysing the ethnic violence in Rwanda. Another work, Neither Settler nor Native: The Making and Unmaking of Permanent Minorities posits that the modern state didn’t begin with the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia, but sprang into being in 1492: the year of the expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Spain following the ‘Reconquista’, which coincided with the European colonisation of the Americas.

Zohran’s mother, Mira Nair, is a progressive filmmaker. Some of her acclaimed movies are seen in their approach as a facet of parallel cinema. Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Masala, The Namesake are more widely applauded, though her cinematic work on life in the slums of Uganda is a class apart. Nair’s films are known for their vibrant storytelling, rich cultural textures and exploration of identity, displacement and human connections. The parents’ imprint is palpable in the son’s politics.

What makes his win even more remarkable is that Zohran “has refused to back down from his vocal support for Palestinian liberation, a position that has long been a death knell for candidates within a party whose establishment is unabashedly pro-Israel,” said The Guardian.

There are other compelling factors driving Mamdani’s success. His approach to New York differs from Frank Sinatra’s self-centred quest to arrive at “the top of the heap”. Zohran takes a leaf, instead, from Sahir Ludhianvi’s angst for Bombay. “Cheen o Arab hamara, Hindosta’n hamara/ Rehne ko ghar nahi hai, saara jahaa’n hamara.” (The far corners of the world belong to me, and I am its homeless citizen.)

Like Sahir, Mamdani identifies with “those who toil in the nights, so they can enjoy the fruits of their labour in the day. Where eight hours on the factory floor or behind the wheels of a cab is enough to pay the mortgage, enough to keep the lights on, enough to send your kids to school”.

Nehru Never Surrender

Nehru never surrendered!!

Jawaharlal Nehru and Chinese Prime Minister Chau N-Lai during the war in December 1962. These letters offered a ceasefire from Chow.

Nehru refused.

India refused to bow down politically despite being under military pressure. And sticking to my limit claims.

Then China was on the lead in NEFA (Arunachal). And for peace there was proposing the 50:50 formula. He got the refusal.

Nehru was in the mood to fight war.

Nehru, angry with Russia's early slow response, wrote two letters to US President Kennedy. In which demanded military aid, especially fighter jets and transport planes.

Nehru said the Chinese army has occupied a portion of the North East Frontier agency, and now the Brahmaputra valley was threatening. They demanded 12 Squadron fighter jets and 10,000 support staff.

Kennedy orders USS Kittyhawk to depart for India. Then standing in the Philippines, it was a large ship fleet, with a group of frigate and distroyers sailing along with aircraft carrier vessels.

But after listening to this fleet's departure to India, China declared a one-sided ceasefire on the night of November 20, 1962. And removed all the army from NEFA.

The war is over.

Actually the war lasted 4 weeks.

Starting 2 weeks, China had a banging success. The attack was sudden, the Indian Army was not deployed there. China continued to spread on empty lands.

Nehru's international muscle, due to Cuban missile crisis. China was taking advantage of this. So as soon as the Cuban missile crisis ended, China handed over.

And offered a ceasefire.

Nehru rejected it.

China strikes again He hasn't got success yet. The army had taken care of, was attentive. Got a strong reply, China could not move forward.

India had not used Air Force till now. Air Force wasn't strong enough to handle both attack and defense.

Calling an American fleet means that American aircraft flying from the Indian Ocean to protect India, and Indian aircraft attacking Chinese land.

War goes to the next level.

So China ceased a one-sided war after hearing the news of Kittyhawk's arrival, emptied the ground and fled.

Nehru's liver does not have strength. Fearing the weak land condition, NEFA would have kneeled 10 days ago, considering proposal to make 50:50.. So today half Arunachal along with Tawang would have been from China.

Bahrahal, Nehru informed Parliament about this ceasefire on November 21. He repeated the condition that should be restored before September 8, 1962.

6 countries Sri Lanka, Egypt, Ghana, Burma, Cambodia, and Indonesia tried to mediate and presented Colombo proposal after China's ceasefire.

Said that both countries should resolve the border dispute by taking their troops behind 20 kilometers. The proposal was in India's fever.

Nehru wrote to Chow N-Lai on January 1, 1963 and talked about peace talks based on Colombo proposals. China rejected LAC proposal, and stuck on restoring pre-war status.

During this time in Parliament, and outside the Parliament, the opposition (read Atal Bihari and his colleagues) criticized the policies of Nehru government.

Bitter insulting tensions especially for forward policy (taking land constipation in disputed areas before 1962) and lack of military preparations.

Surprisingly Nehru or his supporters, the newspaper channels have not given any of these anti-national, traitor, anti-army, anti-Hindu, Pakistani or Chinese agent.

The global community stayed with India.

Russia pressures ceasefire on China after initial hesitation. America has sent a fleet. Israel, which was not recognized by India, also secretly helped by giving weapons.

Talk of favorable proposal for India by 6 countries in Sri Lanka, has happened here.

Actually, there is a fundamental difference between 1962 and 2025. Nehru did not start the attack then. They were stabbed in the back.

Then America didn't forced them to cease war, silently. Nehru was not asking for support from the world by sending musical delegation.

And they were hiding nothing from the country, from start to finish. They were not trying to steal mouth from the questions of the opposition. And China..

Even in face of defeat..

विनायक दामोदर सावरकर की ‘वीरता’ पर सवाल उठाने वाले राहुल गाँधी न सिर्फ़ बीजेपी के निशाने पर हैं, बल्कि इस मसले पर उन्हें तमाम क़ानूनी दिक़्क़तों का सामना भी करना पड़ रहा है। लेकिन आरएसएस ख़ेमे के पत्रकार कहे जाने वाले और अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी की सरकार में केंद्रीय मंत्री रह चुके अरुण शौरी ने अपनी एक नयी किताब के ज़रिए सावरकर समर्थकों को आईना दिखाया है। अरुण शौरी की इस किताब का नाम है ‘द न्यू आयकन सावरकर एंड द फैक्ट्स।’ इस किताब में उन्होंने सावरकर के 'देशप्रेम और साहस’ को लेकर प्रचारित तमाम क़िस्सों की पड़ताल करते हुए उन्हें ‘झूठा और मनगढंत’ पाया है। किताब के सामने आने के बाद सावरकर को 'भारत रत्न’ दिलाने का अभियान चला रहे आरएसएस और बीजेपी के सिद्धांतकार सन्नाटे में है। राहुल की तरह शौरी को ‘विदेशी एजेंट’ बताने के ख़तरे से वे वाक़िफ़ हैं।

दिलचस्प बात ये है कि अरुण शौरी ने एक तीक्ष्णबुद्धि पत्रकार की तरह अपनी हर बात का प्रमाण सावरकर की लेखनी और उस दौर के तमाम दस्तावेज़ों के ज़रिए दिया है जो अकाट्य हैं। अंडमान की जेल जाने से पहले सावरकर निश्चित ही एक क्रांतिकारी भूमिका में थे। हालाँकि यह भूमिका ‘एक्शन’ में सीधे शामिल न होकर किसी को मोहरा बनाने की थी। लेकिन एक बार जेल जाने के बाद सावरकर ने जिस तरह से गिड़गिड़ाते हुए अंग्रेज़ों से माफ़ी माँगी और छूटकर राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन के ख़िलाफ़ काम करने, ख़ासतौर पर हिंदू-मुस्लिम विभाजन के लिए काम करने का वादा किया, यह उनके पूर्व के तमाम कामों पर पानी फेरने वाला था।

इस किताब में शौरी ने सावरकर के जाति प्रथा, अस्पृश्यता या गाय पूजने जैसी मान्यताओं के तर्कसंगत विरोध को रेखांकित किया है (गाय पूजने को लेकर सावरकर के विचार संघ की शाखा से प्रशिक्षित किसी व्यक्ति के लिए बर्दाश्त से बाहर हो सकते हैं!)  लेकिन असल मसला तो उनके राजनीतिक सिद्धांत हैं जिनकी स्वीकार्यता के लिए सावरकर को वीर साबित करना ज़रूरी था। 

शौरी की किताब ‘सावरकरी वीरता’ के तमाम क़िस्सों की पड़ताल करते हुए उन्हें फ़र्ज़ी साबित करती है।सावरकर ने ‘चित्रगुप्त’ के छद्मनाम से ख़ुद एक किताब लिखकर सावरकर को ‘वीर’ की उपाधि दी थी। आत्मप्रचार का ऐसा प्रयास शायद ही किसी ने किया हो। इस किताब के आने के बाद उनके समर्थकों ने उन्हें ‘वीर सावरकर’ बताने का सार्वजनिक अभियान चलाया। इसके लिए तमाम कहानियाँ गढ़ी गयीं। भाषण देने में माहिर तत्कालीन जनसंघ के नेता अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी समुद्र के बीच जहाज़ से कूद कर ‘वीर’ सावरकर के भागने की कहानी कहानी विस्तार से सार्वजनिक सभाओं में सुनाते थे।  लेकिन शौरी ने साबित किया है कि भूमध्य-सागर के बीच जहाज़ से कूद कर भागने का क़िस्सा भी मनगढ़ंत है। 

शौरी ने साबित किया है कि जहाज़ उस समय बीच समुद्र में नहीं, फ़्रांस के मार्सिले बंदरगाह पर ईंधन के लिए खड़ा था और वे खिड़की से निकलकर भागे थे। सावरकर ने बमुश्किल दस-पंद्रह फ़ीट का उथला पानी पार किया था न कि कई किलोमीटर तैरकर तट तक पहुँचे थे। हक़ीक़त ये है कि उन्हें तुरंत पकड़ लिया गया था।1952 में सावरकर ने पुणे में एक व्याख्यान देकर दावा किया था कि सुभाषचंद्र बोस का 1941 में कलकत्ता के घर से भागना और आज़ाद हिंद फ़ौज की तमाम गतिविधियाँ उनके साथ बोस की हुई बातचीत का नतीजा थीं। लेकिन अरुण शौरी ने इस दावे को प्रामाणिक ढंग से ध्वस्त किया है। बोस ने ख़ुद इस संबंध में लिखा है। उनके मुताबिक़ तब सावरकर और जिन्ना में फ़र्क़ नहीं था। सावरकर ने 1911 से 1920 के बीच अंडमान की सेलुलर जेल से ब्रिटिश सरकार को लिखे पत्रों की शृंखला भी पेश की है जिन्हें पढ़ना किसी भी देशभक्त को शर्मिंदा कर सकता है। वे बार-बार 'साम्राज्य के लिए ख़ुद को उपयोगी’ सिद्ध करने का वादा करते हैं।

सावरकर ‘अखंड हिदुस्थान’ का नारा लगाते थे लेकिन आज़ादी के बाद वे लगभग 19 साल ज़िंदा रहे पर इस दिशा में कोई पहल नहीं की। उनका पूरा जीवन हिंदू और मुसलमानों को दो अलग और शत्रुतापूर्ण राष्ट्रों के रूप में सिद्ध करने में बीता।

इस सिद्धांत का प्रतिपादन वे पाकिस्तान का सिद्धांत पेश किये जाने से पहले कर चुके थे। जिन्ना ने इसके लिए उनका आभार भी जताया था। अंग्रेज़ तो हमेशा आभारी थे।

अरुण शौरी ने इस संबंध में सावरकर के कुछ महत्वपूर्ण लेखों और उद्धरणों को सामने रखा है जिन पर अक्सर पर्दा डालने की कोशिश की जाती है। उन्होंने याद दिलाया है कि ‘सिक्स ग्लोरियस अप्रोच्स ऑफ़ इंडियन हिस्ट्री’ में सावरकर ने हिटलर और जापानी जनरल तोजो की प्रशंसा की है क्योंकि वे एकमात्र बाहरी लोग थे जिन्होंने भारत की मदद की। 1963 में प्रकाशित इस किताब में सावरकर ने ‘विकलांग बच्चों को ख़त्म करने की परियोजना के लिए सावरकर की प्रशंसा’ को भी उद्धृत कियाा है। सावरकर भारत के लिए लोकतांत्रिक पद्धति को भी अनुपयुक्त बताते हैं जहाँ के लोग ‘अज्ञानी' हैं। वे ‘एक-व्यक्ति के शासन’ को प्राथमिकता देते हैं।

यह किताब ऐसे समय आयी है जब राहुल गाँधी तमाम जोख़िम उठाते हुए भी सावरकर के इर्द-गिर्द तैयार किये गये आभामंडल को ध्वस्त करने में जुटे हैं। उन्हें पता है कि राष्ट्रीय स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन से अलग रहने वाला आरएसएस सावरकर को अपने ख़ेमे का ‘स्वतंत्रता सेनानी’ बताने का उद्योग कर रहा है। नाथूराम गोडसे के गुरु रहे सावरकर की तस्वीर को संसद के केंद्रीय कक्ष में स्थापित करने की हिमाक़त तो अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी के दौर में ही की जा चुकी है। राहुल गाँधी ने हाल में पुणे की विशेष अदालत में सावरकर पर टिप्पणी को लेकर अपने ख़िलाफ़ चल रहे मुक़दमे की प्रकृति बदलने की माँग की है। उन्होंने ‘समरी ट्रायल' को ‘समन ट्रायल’ में बदलने की माँग करने के लिए दायर याचिका में ज़ोर दिया है कि “यह मामला तथ्य और क़ानून दोनों के जटिल प्रश्न उठाता है जिसके लिए विस्तृत ज़िरह की आवश्यकता है… इसलिए साक्ष्य का बड़ा हिस्सा ऐतिहासिक प्रकृति की सामग्री होगी, जिसके लिए अकादमिक जाँच की आवश्यकता होगी।”

2023 में सावरकर के एक रिश्तेदार सात्यकि ए सावरकर ने राहुल गाँधी की एक टिप्पणी को लेकर मानहानि का दावा दायर किया था। उन्होंने राहुल गाँधी को अधिकतम दंड और मुआवज़े की माँग की है। बीजेपी का ख़ेमा इसे लेकर काफ़ी ख़ुश था। लेकिन राहुल गाँधी जिस तरह मामले को अकादमिक जाँच की ओर ले जा रहे हैं, वह उसके लिए मुसीबत पैदा करेगा। ख़ासतौर पर जब उसके ‘अपने’ अरुण शौरी ने सावरकर के नाम पर चल रहे फर्ज़ीवाड़े को उजागर करने के लिए किताब ही लिख दी है।

वैसे, सावरकर के माफ़ी माँगने की बात किसी वामपंथी ने नहीं, दक्षिणपंथी इतिहासकार कहलाने वाले आर.सी.मजूमदार ने ही उजागर की थी।

1975 में भारत सरकार के प्रकाशन विभाग से प्रकाशित उनकी किताब ’पीनल सेटेलमेंट्स इन द अंडमान्स’ में सावरकर के शर्मनाक माफ़ीनामे दर्ज हैं। 1913 में भेजे गये एक माफ़ी याचिका का अंत करते हुए सावरकर ने जो लिखा है वह किसी भी देशभक्त को शर्मिंदा करेगा। सावरकर लिखते हैं-

“अंत में, हुजूर, मैं आपको फिर से याद दिलाना चाहता हूँ कि आप दयालुता दिखाते हुए सज़ा माफ़ी की मेरी 1911 में भेजी गयी याचिका पर पुनर्विचार करें और इसे भारत सरकार को फॉरवर्ड करने की अनुशंसा करें।

भारतीय राजनीति के ताज़ा घटनाक्रमों और सबको साथ लेकर चलने की सरकार की नीतियों ने संविधानवादी रास्ते को एक बार फिर खोल दिया है। अब भारत और मानवता की भलाई चाहने वाला कोई भी व्यक्ति, अंधा होकर उन कांटों से भरी राहों पर नहीं चलेगा, जैसा कि 1906-07 की नाउम्मीदी और उत्तेजना से भरे वातावरण ने हमें शांति और तरक्की के रास्ते से भटका दिया था।

इसलिए अगर सरकार अपनी असीम भलमनसाहत और दयालुता में मुझे रिहा करती है, मैं आपको यक़ीन दिलाता हूँ कि मैं संविधानवादी विकास का सबसे कट्टर समर्थक रहूँगा और अंग्रेज़ी सरकार के प्रति वफ़ादार रहूँगा, जो कि विकास की सबसे पहली शर्त है।

जब तक हम जेल में हैं, तब तक महामहिम के सैकड़ों-हजारों वफ़ादार प्रजा के घरों में असली हर्ष और सुख नहीं आ सकता, क्योंकि ख़ून के रिश्ते से बड़ा कोई रिश्ता नहीं होता। अगर हमें रिहा कर दिया जाता है, तो लोग ख़ुशी और कृतज्ञता के साथ सरकार के पक्ष में, जो सज़ा देने और बदला लेने से ज़्यादा माफ़ करना और सुधारना जानती है, नारे लगायेंगे।इससे भी बढ़कर संविधानवादी रास्ते में मेरा धर्म-परिवर्तन भारत और भारत से बाहर रह रहे उन सभी भटके हुए नौजवानों को सही रास्ते पर लाएगा, जो कभी मुझे अपने पथ-प्रदर्शक के तौर पर देखते थे। मैं भारत सरकार जैसा चाहे, उस रूप में सेवा करने के लिए तैयार हूं, क्योंकि जैसे मेरा यह रूपांतरण अंतरात्मा की पुकार है, उसी तरह से मेरा भविष्य का व्यवहार भी होगा। मुझे जेल में रखने से आपको होने वाला फ़ायदा मुझे जेल से रिहा करने से होने वाले होने वाले फ़ायदे की तुलना में कुछ भी नहीं है।

जो ताक़तवर है, वही दयालु हो सकता है और एक होनहार पुत्र सरकार के दरवाज़े के अलावा और कहाँ लौट सकता है। आशा है, हुजूर मेरी याचनाओं पर दयालुता से विचार करेंगे।”

जिन कारणों से आरएसएस ख़ेमा सावरकर को ‘वीर’ बताता है, इस याचिका में सावरकर उनसे ही तौबा करते नज़र आते हैं। ख़ुद को सुधारने का वचन देते हैं। 

इतिहास गवाह है कि अंग्रेज़ों ने उन्हें रिहा करके हिंदू-मुसलमानों के बीच ज़हर बोने के लिए उनका इस्तेमाल किया। आज़ादी के बाद आरएसएस भी इसी राह पर चलते हुए सत्ता के शीर्ष पर पहुँचा। देश लगातार इस अपराध की सज़ा भुगत रहा है।

Why Breastfeeding?

  

Breastfeeding offers numerous benefits for both the baby and the mother. For babies, breast milk provides the ideal balance of nutrients essential for growth and development. It contains antibodies and other immunological factors that help protect babies from infections and diseases. Additionally, breast milk is easier for babies to digest compared to formula, reducing the risk of constipation and colic. Breastfeeding also promotes a strong bond between mother and baby through physical closeness and skin-to-skin contact. It lowers the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), asthma, allergies, obesity, and type 2 diabetes in later life. Moreover, breastfeeding is associated with higher IQ scores and better cognitive development. It also eliminates a myriad of infections caused by unclean utensils.

 

 

For mothers, breastfeeding offers significant health benefits. It reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes, and postpartum depression. Breastfeeding also helps the uterus contract and return to its pre-pregnancy size more quickly, reducing postpartum bleeding. Additionally, it can help mothers lose pregnancy weight by burning extra calories. The convenience of breastfeeding cannot be overstated, as it is always available, at the right temperature, and requires no preparation or sterilization. Financially, it eliminates the need to buy formula, which can be expensive.

 

 

Beyond the individual benefits, breastfeeding also positively impacts the environment and community health. It reduces waste from formula packaging and bottles, contributing to a healthier planet. Furthermore, it leads to healthier populations, reducing healthcare costs and the burden on health services. Due to these significant benefits for both mother and child, breastfeeding is highly recommended by health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). In the nurturing care components, breastfeeding contributes to adequate nutrition during the first six months as well as good health.

 

Let us educate mothers on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months. Again, educating mothers to feed on a balanced diet to ensure balanced breast milk is also important.

  

Bangladesh Movement

नोबेल से सम्मानित अर्थशास्त्री प्रोफ़ेसर मोहम्मद यूनुस ने जब बांग्लादेश की अंतरिम सरकार का नेतृत्व सँभालने के लिए पेरिस से ढाका के लिए उड़ान भरी तो उनके ज़ेहन में ‘मई 1968’ की गूँज ज़रूर रही होगी। 56 साल पहले पेरिस के छात्र आंदोलन ने न सिर्फ़ फ़्रांस बल्कि पूरी दुनिया हिला दी थी। चार्ल्स द गाल जैसे राष्ट्र-नायक को फ़्रांस छोड़कर भागना पड़ा था जैसे कि शेख़ हसीना को बांग्लादेश छोड़ना पड़ा है। वैसे तो यह सब अंदाज़ा लगाने जैसा है लेकिन मो.यूनुस की प्रतिक्रिया देखते हुए इसे कल्पना से बाहर भी नहीं कहा जा सकता। मो.यूनुस ने 8 अगस्त को ढाका पहुँचकर कहा- 'हमारे छात्र हमें जो भी रास्ता दिखाएंगे, हम उसी के साथ आगे बढ़ेंगे!’

मो.यूनुस 84 साल के हैं। मई 968 में वे 28 साल के जोशीले युवा थे जो तीन साल पहले फुलब्राइट छात्रवृत्ति पाकर अमेरिका अर्थशास्त्र में शोध के लिए गये थे। पेरिस के मज़दूरों के साथ खड़े हुए छात्र-छात्राओं ने जिस तरह विश्वविद्यालय को चार्ल्स द गाल की तानाशाही के ख़िलाफ़ मोर्चे में बदला था उसकी लहर ने पूरी दुनिया के छात्रों को भिगो दिया था। राजनीति में तानाशाही और समाज में पितृसत्ता से आज़ाद होने की छटपटाहट में डूबे युवक-युवतियों ने विद्रोह का नया व्याकरण रचा था।यह एक स्वतःस्फूर्त ज्वार था जो मध्ययुगीन स्थापित मान्यताओं ध्वस्त करने पर आमादा था। मो.यूनुस ने 1971 में जब मिडिल टेनिसी स्टेट युनिवर्सिटी में सहायक प्रोफ़ेसर बतौर बांग्लादेश मुक्ति संग्राम के समर्थन में ‘नागरिक समिति’ बनायी होगी तो पेरिस से उठा यह ज्वार उन्हें निश्चित ही ताक़त दे रहा होगा। फ़्रांस में कहावत है कि ‘हर आदमी के दो देश होते हैं- उसका अपना और फ़्रांस!’

मो.यूनुस छात्रों के दिखाये रास्ते पर बढ़ने की बात यूँ ही नहीं कर रहे हैं। दरअसल, बांग्लादेश के छात्रों ने वह कर दिखाया है जिसकी कोई उम्मीद नहीं कर रहा था। बांग्लादेश में विपक्ष को लगभग ग़ायब कर दिया गया था, विरोध में उठने वाली हर आवाज़ का देशद्रोह बताते हुए दमन कर दिया गया था, मीडिया अघोषित इमरजेंसी का शिकार हो चला था और आँकड़ों में दर्ज तरक़्क़ी की आड़ में बढ़ती ग़ैर-बराबरी को छुपा दिया गया था। लेकिन शेख़ हसीना भूल गयी थीं कि आम बंगाली भोजन के बिना तो रह सकते हैं पर बहस के बिना नहीं रह सकते। तर्क-वितर्क में डुबे होने के कारण ही आधुनिकता का पहले चरण बंगाल में पड़ा था और वह भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में पुनर्जागरण (जैसा भी, जितना भी) का केंद्र बना था। यही वह भावना थी कि बंगाल के पूर्वी पाकिस्तान के मुसलमानो ने ‘इस्लामी स्वर्ग’ के पीछे छिपे छल को पहचाना और बांग्लादेश का निर्माण करके इतिहास ही नहीं भूगोल भी बदल दिया।   

इस परिदृश्य में बांग्लादेश के छात्रों ने मोर्चा सँभाला। यह भूमिका इतिहास ने सौंपी है कि छात्र-नौजवान अपने युग के सवालों का जवाब दें। बांग्लादेश के नौजवानों ने इस चुनौती को स्वीकार किया। वे जानते थे कि इस मोर्चे के पहले चरण कि इबारत उनके ख़ून से लिखी जायेगी और सैकड़ों की तादाद में शहादत देकर उन्होंने ये क़ीमत अदा की। पेरिस के छात्रों ने चार्ल्स द गाल की तानाशाही के ख़िलाफ़ जो पोस्टर लगाये थे उनमें लिखा रहता था- ‘जनरल विल इज़ अगेंस्ट द विल ऑफ जनरल!’ ( जन इच्छा जनरल की इच्छा के ख़िलाफ़ है)। बांग्लादेश के छात्र दुनिया के सामने यह साबित करने में क़ामयाब रहे कि जन इच्छा शेख़ हसीना की इच्छा ख़िलाफ़ हो चुकी है। जनवरी में उनका चुनाव जीतना धाँधली का नतीजा था।

दुनिया के इतिहास में दूसरा कोई उदाहरण नहीं है जब भारी उथल-पुथल से गुज़र रहे किसी देश के राष्ट्रपति ने तीनों सेनाओं के अध्यक्षों और छात्रनेताओं के साथ बैठकर अंतरिम सरकार के स्वरूप और उसके प्रमुख के नाम पर चर्चा की हो। बांग्लादेश में ऐसा ही हुआ। स्टूडेंट अगेंस्ट डिस्क्रिमिनेशन मूवमेंट (भेदभाव विरोधी छात्र मोर्चा ) के नेशनल कोआर्डिनेटर नाहिद इस्लाम ने नयी सरकार के प्रमुख बतौर मो.यूनुस का नाम प्रस्तावित ही नहीं किया, यह भी साफ़ कहा कि ‘हम किसी और सरकार को स्वीकार नहीं करेंगे!’

जो देश एक से ज़्यादा बार सैनिक शासन का शिकार हो चला हो, वहाँ यह ऐसी शर्त रखना और सेना का उसे मंज़ूर कर लेना बताता है कि छात्रों का यह आंदोलन देश की भावना का प्रतीक बन गया है। 

मई अड़सठ में पेरिस से शुरू हुआ छात्र आंदोलन भी फ़्रांस की क्रांति की तरह असफल हो गया था लेकिन दुनिया को ज़्यादा इंसाफ़-पसंद और लोकतांत्रिक बनाने के लिहाज़ से उसकी भूमिका अभूतपूर्व रही जैसे कि फ़्रांस की क्रांति से निकले ‘स्वतंत्रता, समानता और बंधुत्व' के नारे की है। लेकिन बीसवीं सदी के अंत की ओर बढ़ती दुनिया में छात्र आंदोलनों की स्वतंत्र भूमिका तेज़ी से कम होती गयी जिनके पास कोई बड़ा सपना हो ( भारत में क्षेत्रीय अस्मिता को राजनीतिक शक्ति बनाने वाला असम गण परिषद अपनी सीमित सोच की वजह से पानी का बुलबुला ही साबित हुआ।) ऐसे में बांग्लादेश की घटना छात्र आंदोलनों के इतिहास में नयी चमक की तरह है।

छब्बीस साल के नाहिद इस्लाम अब मो.यूनुस की सरकार में शामिल हो चुके हैं। उनका यह कहना मायने रखता है कि “हम जीवन की सुरक्षा, सामाजिक न्याय और एक नए राजनीतिक परिदृश्य के अपने वादे के माध्यम से एक नया लोकतांत्रिक बांग्लादेश बनाएंगे!”

भारतीय मीडिया, ख़ासतौर पर न्यूज़ चैनलों की नफ़रती ख़बरों की क़ैद में छटपटा रहे लोगों के लिए बांग्लादेश के घटनाक्रम का मतलब ‘हिंदुओं पर हमला’ ही है।  लेकिन यह एक जटिल स्थिति है जिसमें हर आने वाले दिन के साथ ‘सेक्युलर बांग्लादेश’ के विचार का विरोध करने वाली जमातें हाशिये पर जा रही हैं।  यह संयोग नहीं कि सरकार की कमान सँभालने के पहले ही मो.यूनुस ने कहा, “अगर आप देश का नेतृत्व करने के लिए मुझ पर विश्वास करते हैं तो आपको सबसे पहले अपने आस-पास हिंसा और अल्पसंख्यकों पर हमले बंद करने होंगे।आप किसी पर भी हमला नहीं कर सकते।आपको मेरी बात माननी पड़ेगी।  अगर आप मेरी नहीं सुनते हैं , तो मेरी यहाँ कोई ज़रूरत नहीं है।इससे बेहतर ये होगा कि मैं चला जाऊँ।” 

यही नहीं, बांग्लादेश की पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री खालिदा जिया ने भी अपनी रिहाई के तुरंत बाद एक बयान में एक लोकतांत्रिक बांग्लादेश बनाने का आह्वान किया, जहां ‘सभी धर्मों का सम्मान किया जाए।’  माना जा रहा है कि ख़ालिदा जिया की पार्टी बांग्लादेश नेशनलिस्ट पार्टी (बीएनपी) आम चुनाव में मुख्य खिलाड़ी बनके उभरेगी। बीएनपी के वरिष्ठ नेता गायेश्वर रॉय ने कहा है कि बीएनपी एक राष्ट्रवादी पार्टी है जो हर धर्म का सम्मान करती है। अतीत में जमाते इस्लामी से उनका संबंध चुनावी रणनीति के तहत था, न कि वैचारिक आधार पर।

बंगबंधु शेख़ मुजीबुर्रहमान की खंडित प्रतिमाओं और सैकड़ों की तादाद में मुस्लिम नेताओं और कारोबारियों के मारे जाने से मुँह फेरकर केवल हिंदुओं पर हुए हमले की तस्वीर देखने से बांग्लादेश की जटिल स्थिति को नहीं समझा जा सकता। जमाते इस्लामी और उसका ‘छात्र शिविर’ अपने सांप्रदायिक इरादों के साथ इस जनाक्रोश की लहर में वैसे ही शामिल हुआ है, जैसे कि स्वतःस्फूर्त आंदोलन में होता है। लेकिन बांग्लादेश की नयी सत्ता संरचना, ख़ासतौर पर लोकतंत्र को समर्पित छात्र नेताओं से यह आशा की जा सकती है कि बांग्लादेश उन प्रतिबद्धताओं से दूर नहीं जायेगा जिन पर इस देश का निर्माण हुआ है।

पुनश्च: फ़्रांस के शासक लुई चौदहवें ने ‘मैं ही राज्य हूँ’ की घोषणा की थी जिसका नतीजा उसके वंशज लुई सोलहवें ने भुगता जब 1789 में फ़्रांस की क्रांति के दौरान उसका गला काट दिया गया। लोकतंत्र में नेता के लिए ‘मैं ही राज्य हूँ’ समझने की कोई गुंजाइश नहीं होती। लोकतंत्र मौक़ा देता है कि शासक अलोकप्रिय होने पर गद्दी छोड़े और जनता के बीच जाकर फिर से विश्वास अर्जित करे। अलोकप्रिय होने के बावजूद येन-केन-प्रकारेण सत्ता में बने रहने की ज़िद हमेशा भारी पड़ती है। यही ग़लती चार्ल्स द गाल ने की थी जिसके कार्टूनों पर ‘लोता से मुख’ (मैं ही राज्य हूँ) लिखा जाता था और यही शेख़ हसीना ने भी की। लोकतंत्र नेताओं के लिए धड़ पर गर्दन बने रहने की शर्त है।

        Sadbhav Mission has been working for 35 years. Our thrust has been on developing grassroots resistance against sectarianism. We publish magazine and books, distribute fliers, organize workshops and lectures, carry marches. We also used to hold weekly meetings in few places. During 1992-2004 we formed an Ekta Pachayat in Indira Colony at Yamuna Pushta, New Delhi.

        I feel there is need for a regular activity that can attract youth, working age groups and senior citizens. Based on my own experience with jogging, that I started at the age of 36 in 1984 and continue (occasionally) even now, I think jogging could be a regular activity that can attract youths as well as elderly people. I present my proposal for your kind consideration. Those who feel convinced, may write to me. We can form a core group and hold a meeting to initiate this activity.

            Jogging is an enjoyable practice. It helps you keep healthy without going to a doctor. It also helps mental health by keeping pressures off your head. Jogging with a thought free mind uplifts soul and springs creative ideas.

            Jog individually (not in a group). That saves you from gossip and gives you opportunity to be one with nature, to see clouds, trees, birds freely. Also, jog with a rhythm. Initially you may get tired after jogging half a kilometer. But in ten days, you will be able to jog for 4 km. Keep your mouth closed while jogging, breathe through the nose. Jogging activates lungs, regulates blood circulation, and increases the capacity of the body to fight disease. After jogging, you may drink lemon shikanji (neeboo pani). 

            Once a week, jog in a group for half an hour and talk for an hour informally (no gossip) on self and social concerns. It will build friendship among the group. You will be able to sublime prejudice in society and promote insaaniyat (humanism). It will serve a great societal need to curb sectarian politics and corporate dominance.

            For high school and college students (boys and girls alike), anxious about admissions and career, it will be a refreshing relief. Whatever course of study comes your way, take it up with involvement. Focus on understanding. It will bring fascination.   

For retired people, this activity will give a purpose of life and save them becoming a fodder to sectarian trap promoting prejudice through gossip and playing cards. They can be a silent career of revolution that the country needs to liberate shrines of sectarian control and economy of corporate dominance. We may draw lessons from Sufi-Saint movement and the freedom movement. In Juhapura (Ahmedadad) I saw a Senior Citizens Club. Members walk to the meeting point and hold daily meetings and hold structured and openminded discussions on relevant issues. They participated in several of our programs on communal harmony.

For those in other ages, including the ones in jobs, jogging and thinking will be satisfying. They will enhance their sensitivity and creativity. Those who have academic temperament, affinity towards students and are driven by truth, nonviolence and creativity, may aspire for teaching. Through teaching your subject with interest, you can motivate students to shake off prejudice and strive for freshness, freedom and equity.

Eidgah is not about Eid

 Eidgah is not about Eid.

It is not about Hamid. It is not about Eidi. It is not about Ameenah. And it is certainly is not only about Muslims.

It is about a 4 year old Hamid’s love for his grandmother and the sacrifice that he makes at a tender age on the auspicious occasion of Eid.

It is about the beauty of Munshi Premchand’s (Dhanpat Rai) understanding of human character and writing an outstanding story in 1933 about something that is universal. One can re-write the exact story, and just replace Eid with Diwali or Christmas or Hannukah or anything else that is a “happy celebration”.

To me, the story Eidgah is repeated several times in an year over several years in different settings, and in different parts of the world. And yes, often on a non Eid day.

It’s about something that some of us do every day, some often, and some almost never.

It is about love. It is about beauty. It is about the beautiful side of human nature,that is probably present in varying degrees in each one of us.

And for some of us, like me, who do not observe “Roza” it is a reminder that it is Eid, and it’s time for Cuckoo to read the story with her children, and to make sure she makes sevaiyian as part of the evening dessert.

I will definitely read the story now. This time, just by myself as my kids are in college now! Hoping to complete it without crying…I have done this for several years now, but never finished the story without sobbing!
